ABSTRACT

The Eastern perspective is strongly influenced by Buddhist philosophy and Gandhian peace economics. This chapter argues that the economy is a means to reach other more fundamental and deeper ends. Work should contribute to personal development through mutually binding collaboration with others. Peter Pruzan was born in 1936 in New York, became a Danish citizen in 1972 and is known for his pioneering work within business ethics, ethical accounting and value-based management. Today there are several universities offering management education inspired by Eastern philosophy whose goal is to help to develop a deeper spiritual awareness setting out clearly the visions and values necessary for handling the challenges of current society, locally and globally. Ethical accounting, value-based leadership and spiritual leadership are motivated by the need to develop environmentally and socially responsible businesses and organizations that provide employees with meaningful work, contribute to personal and organizational development and provide connection between individual and organizational values.
