ABSTRACT

Experimenting with innovative narratives helps to connect utopia to the reality from which it stems. Social theory and practice can be treated as narratives within narratives. An interesting task is to find out how they are constructed, used and misused. According to, among others, Nietzsche and Mannheim, theories are often connected to ideology, interest and power. Economists tell stories and use abstract concepts and models to describe and explain economics and economic practice. In order to make social sciences and economics more "down to earth" Whitehead suggested principles which have applications outside their original context. From the narrative approach it must be possible to give convincing arguments validating the utopian description of the economy, nature and culture, and present them as integrated parts of an indefinite whole which must be satisfied. In addition, the analysis of ecological economics must satisfy the claims of logic, such as truth or coherence.
