ABSTRACT

This chapter argues that change must be implemented on all levels at the same time, ontology must be part of the curriculum at universities and business schools, alternative economic systems must be developed based on ontological preconditions, business practice must find a balance between society and nature and we must get rid, once and for all, of the idea of economic man. Change is initiated by a situation made up of anomalies, negative unintended consequences or disturbing factors of any kind between worldview, system, practice and individual. Today we face problems on all levels and it is impossible both to understand and explain the problems and to come up with solutions. Change is possible because, for the first time in history, it has become obvious that individual self-interest coincides with humanity's long-term collective interests. Empirical studies indicate that stricter environmental regulations, better business practices and more efficient technologies are needed, but they are not sufficient.
