ABSTRACT
The materialistic and spiritualistic crises manifest themselves in politics in and treatment of nature. Political system seems unable to deal with the situation as the Republicans and Democrats are hopelessly divided in their view of the role of government in society. The political crisis in society has basic philosophical underpinnings that relate to excessive individualism. The chapter looks at dysfunctional political system in some detail and examines the ways in which the environment is being affected by activities to the detriment of quality of life, if not existence. Science contributes to the environmental problems as it dehumanizes nature by treating nature objectively in the interests of manipulating it to suit human interests. A spiritual renewal is indeed crucial to the survival of our country and our world to establish a connection with each other and with nature that goes beyond science and capitalism into a different way of acting toward each other and with nature.
