      ABSTRACT

The concept of British values has been introduced to the Early Years curriculum with mixed feelings. The British values are: individual liberty, democracy, rule of law and mutual respect and tolerance of other faiths and beliefs. These values can be instilled into Early Years practice through the Early Years Foundation Stage curriculum and start with teaching children to take turns, negotiate, share, compromise and learn to resolve conflict in a responsible and fair way. It must involve the whole community and so the child needs to be visible to the meaningful neighbour, who also needs to follow the British values. From an early age, young children need to make sense of the world and they make sense of the world by forming an identity. Practitioners need to foster a real and true sense of belonging for children in the Early Years if they are to be emotionally intelligent with a good self-esteem and care and regard for each other.
