ABSTRACT

This chapter helps to explain the extent to which the factors "worked examples" and "mastery learning" are significant. It also helps to explain the importance of learning objectives and success criteria for visible learning and successful teaching. The chapter explains what is meant by the Visible Learning Wheel and what possibilities exist for implementing it. Successful learning requires clarity – not only in the learning process but also in view of the learning outcome. The basic idea of the Mastery Learning approach is that all children can learn something when they are provided with adequate explanations regarding the understanding and mastery of the subject to be learned. The effects of mastery testing are particularly strong on lower ability students, primarily because it increases the amount of instructional time required by, on average, 25 percent for these students. Define success criteria about the lessons, which then become binding for teacher and visible to the learners.
