ABSTRACT

This chapter examines Egyptian reactions to Israel’s progress in nuclear research, before discussing Cairo’s relatively late entry into the nuclear age and some of the individuals associated with the founding of the Atomic Energy Establishment (AEE). It discusses the structure of the AEE and some of the directors who have been in charge of it. The chapter explores the AEE’s repeated attempts since 1957 to expand nuclear research, particularly in the light of Israel’s progress. Egypt was in any case a late starter in the nuclear field. Unlike Israel the Egyptian Board of Atomic Energy was not created until 1955. Its functions were to formulate policy for an AEE that would in turn conduct research into the peaceful uses of nuclear energy. Egypt was in any case a late starter in the nuclear field.
