ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book investigates everyday experiences of queer Indian men on digital spaces. It explores the ways in which queer male identities are formed on virtual spaces and how the existence of such spaces challenge and critiques Indianness. Drawing from ethnographic research conducted among queer men in Kolkata, New Delhi and the suburban area of Barasat in India, as well as virtual ethnography conducted over multiple digital spaces (such as PlanetRomeo, Facebook and Grindr), the book also investigates the various practices through which queer men engage with a digital culture that has permeated and become an integral part of queer social life in India. An interdisciplinary approach is used to examine the experience of Indian queer men in digital spaces and looks at the ways in which the online/offline component of their lives intersects with each other.
