ABSTRACT

The history of global queer politics is steeped with figures such as the radical faeries and drag queens, whose transgressive bodies have been at the forefront of the queer political movement. This chapter considers a range of profiles on PlanetRomeo and Grindr, alongside discussions around effeminophobia (and tangentially transphobia) that have emanated from discussion groups and interviews with the researcher. Altman has argued that a system of global queering is taking place across the world, where gay men are claiming a form of universality with their queer counterparts in the West. Through a process of globalisation, homogeneous Western identities such as gay have gained currency, perpetuating normative masculine 'gay identities' over other forms of queer identification. The chapter also discusses Davey Wavey because he is a popular figure within the urban queer male circles in India. Wavey is one of many gay vloggers who have become well-known figures after their vlogs gained a popular following within the queer male community.
