ABSTRACT

This chapter argues that teaching has to be done to the end of arousing a consciousness of membership, active and participant membership in a society of unfulfilled promises. It is not an exaggeration to suggest that educational leaders are complicit in the perpetuation of today's educational shortcomings. Most people are quite willing to acknowledge that the world has changed, they can now demonstrate the relevance of educational assumptions, policies, and practices that take these global changes into account. Sometimes, there are fervent attempts to create policies purported to offer solutions-all responses that have been shown not to be successful in the long-term educational success of minoritized students. The chapter emphasizes the need for comprehensive approach to educational leadership, one that requires leaders to take a stand, embrace the chaos and ambiguity, focus on information sharing and relationships, and develop a strong sense of the core organizational vision.
