ABSTRACT

The tendency toward autarchic nationalism was originally a mighty solvent in the process of the disintegration of world economics. The early advocates of autarchy were opposed to colonial empires and objected to international trade; both were built on force, and both were causing wars and everlasting friction. Complete economic isolation was to ensure peace by breaking up particular national empires, as well as the international trade empire. It does not work in this way at present. It has maintained its pacifist note to some degree, but it is, on the other hand, a pacemaker of economic militarism.
