ABSTRACT

This chapter presents a series of activities to allow critical care staff to reflect upon their own understanding about patient/family involvement, and to make them aware of the range of possible definitions of involvement offered by patients/family members. It describes an intervention focused on facilitating a direct approach for patients/family members to convey to professionals their desired level of involvement. Similar to the assessment of interprofessional collaboration to help accurately assess the nature of patient/family member involvement in a critical care unit, it is recommended that observations are initially undertaken. The chapter aims to provide a more nuanced view of the range of what involvement means to family members themselves. These data can be used with a second activity focused on defining family member involvement designed to help critical care staff gain a deeper insight into family involvement in the delivery of care.
