ABSTRACT

The dynamics of four, the quaternity, is an important motif and symbol in relation to theories about creation and the self. This chapter begins be exploring the quaternity as a symbol and metaphor of creation. It goes on to consider Jung's work on the fourth in relation to the self, psychological development and integration. Developing on from this, the chapter examines the importance of the fourth from a psychological and therapeutic perspective in terms of the fourth being the dynamic which disturbs yet informs and creates thought, reflection and integration and is a symbol of a dynamic wholeness.
