ABSTRACT

The first chapter introduces the main themes and the approach adopted. Reflective practice as a concept and practice is explored and extended in five different contexts: professional practice, individual creative practice, collaborative creative practice, creative practice amplified with digital technology and through research. In this exploration of creative reflective practice, the primary focus is on the thinking and making processes that give rise to these outcomes. Creative reflective practice is seen through the perspective of people whose ideas and works have informed the writing at every level. The approach is based on the proposition that the practitioner perspective offers a view from the inside of practice itself that is both valuable and distinctive. Interviews with architects, artists, choreographers, curators, designers, educators, musicians, performers, scientists and technologists represent a broad spectrum of creative activities and interdisciplinary work. An analysis of the interviews in order to identify similar as well as differentiating features has informed the ideas and insights presented in each chapter. These are supported by practitioner narratives and diaries, research studies and historical accounts. Notes and references are provided at the end of each chapter.
