ABSTRACT

Chapter 5 explores the nature of reflection in creative practice amplified by digital technology. Embedding the digital into creative practice has had a profound effect on the way practitioners think and make works, a process that is continually evolving in the face of a continuing and deepening relationship. Digitally amplified practice provides practitioners with new ways of generating fresh insights into their processes and the creative works that emerge. We focus on four kinds of amplification in which the digital role is differentiated as tool, mediator, medium and partner. In order to provide context for the amplified practices described, relevant foundational theories and frameworks are introduced. The discussion is informed and illustrated by the ideas and works of established creative practitioners in the field for whom digital technology is integral to the way they work. In order to provide context for the amplified practices described, foundational research and theoretical concepts of augmented and embodied cognition are introduced.
