ABSTRACT

In Chapter 6 reflection as a research practice is the main focus. It explores practitioner approaches to making, appraising and documenting their creative work in the context of private and shared research practices, distinguished here as personal or formal research. Reflective practice is undergoing a renaissance driven by new forms of research carried out in conjunction with creative practice. This ‘practice-based’ research is an emerging field that is expanding our understanding of the nature of knowledge in and from practice. For practitioners, research projects that connect closely with creative practice provide a means of extending their personal work at the same time as enhancing their ability to share and debate it with others. Practice-based research is relatively new and includes disciplines from art, design and technology to education and health care, accompanied by an eclectic range of approaches and methods within which reflective practice has an important role. We explore the way new research practices are generating practice-based evidence drawing on PhD research carried out by creative practitioners.
