ABSTRACT

This chapter deals with basic statistics for describing and summarizing data, including techniques for reporting frequencies, cross-tabulations, measures of center (mean, median, and mode), and measures of variability (range, variance, and standard deviation). It discusses graphical techniques for summarizing data, including the production of histograms, bar charts, and box plots. This chapter also discusses the trade-offs in transforming one’s data in terms of their suitability for certain kinds of statistical analysis and the loss of information through transformation.
