ABSTRACT

Many forms of violence are forbidden by law and so constitute criminal violence. In this chapter the focus is first on early intervention with children and adolescents to try to prevent later criminal violence. The convicted violent offender, juvenile and adult, is subject to the appropriate legal penalty. This chapter considers the effectiveness of criminal justice sanctions in both punishing and treating different types of violent offender in closed institutions and in the community. The particular case of the mentally disordered offender is also looked at in terms of treatment in secure conditions and in the community.
