ABSTRACT

Chapter 11 is the first of three chapters dealing with support activities in the value chain in part three of the book on corporate functions. It covers the role of information, information technology and management systems for environmental sustainability. Following an overview of the function, its environmental impact is highlighted and how it is itself influenced by environmental issues. This makes the business case for greener information and management systems which are introduced with an overview. The ISO 14000 series and the Eco-Management and Audit Scheme (EMAS) are then covered in more detail alongside other tools such as the eco-efficiency portfolio matrix and sustainability balanced scorecard. Apps for environmental management and further examples and practices of green, sustainable and environmental technology, information or management systems and information technology conclude the chapter. A summary and suggested questions and activities are provided alongside sources and recommendations for further reading.
