ABSTRACT

In this chapter, the author explores some of the learning experienced by young children as a result of their engagement in the civic spaces of schools. She draws on previous chapters to show how engagement teaches children about belonging, builds empathy, allows for re-readings of self in relation to others, and grows multiplistic thinking. Though she draws upon all data, she spends a good deal of time with the 4th grade data set, which includes extensive video and post-task interviews with children. She closes with a discussion of four conditions that seemingly facilitate or hinder children’s civic growth.
