ABSTRACT

A connection between the Smarta tradition and the Ramanandi tradition would explain the presence of the worship of Siv in works like the Ramcaritmanas of Tulsidas. Some accounts about Ramananda report that he was condemned to eat apart from his Sri Vaisnava brethren because they accused him to not have observed the privacy of his meal after a long pilgrimage, thus violating Sri Vainava tradition. There are gaddis in Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Himachal Pradesh, and Gujarat. Many other gaddis arose from Anantananda's disciples. Krsnadas is given particular emphasis in the hagiographic accounts of Nabhadas, as he was the latter's dada guru. Krsnadas' conquest of Galta creates a link between the Ramanandi and the Kachavaha dynasty of Amer. Ramananda was associated with a saguna form of Ram worship that should be considered as the initial core of what became the rasik branch of the sampradaya. The link between the Kullu area and Ramanandis traditionally goes back to Krsnadas.
