ABSTRACT
Baidu and Tencent are direct competitors of Alibaba. While Alibaba started as an ecommerce platform, Baidu started as a search engine and Tencent focused on instant messaging. Known in China as BAT, they have met more than one time in the market; especially in the last years, BAT started their extensive business diversification and internationalization. In Chapter 7, we discuss how Baidu's founder Li Yanhong has built a business ecosystem around search technology and data, and how Tencent's founder Ma Huateng has developed a digital communication and entertainment empire.
