ABSTRACT

Newcomers Xiaomi (2010) and LeEco (2004) are disrupting markets. While Baidu and Tencent are predominantly software focused ecosystems, Xiaomi and LeEco are hardware focused ecosystems. Xiaomi has disrupted the consumer electronics business with a revolutionary asset light business model that combines fans marketing and incubating new ventures with outsourced R&D and production. LeEco follows a ‘do it yourself’ approach while hiring top talents to produce digital content, content viewers such as TVs and smartphones and even driverless cars. We discuss how Xiaomi and LeEco are building up their business ecosystems and focus on their growth, diversification and internationalization.
