ABSTRACT

Passenger motor cars were the first type of vehicle to be experimented with when early attempts were made to utilize the internal combustion engine for transport purposes. To-day the motor car and the motor cycle are well established as the ordinary type of vehicle among people who can afford to run a carriage of their own. In all countries, motor cars and motor cycles constitute by far the greatest proportion of all the mechanical vehicles utilizing the roads. For pleasure purposes, the motor car and the cheaper motor cycle have obtained a great vogue, and year by year the number of such motor users is increasing. The motor cycle-cheap in first cost and cheap in running costs-and the recently developed "light-car," with its modern high-efficiency, high-speed engine, combining the advantages of low cost and low taxation, have enabled many who could not afford to run a large car to participate in the pleasures of road travel.
