ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses an approach to the teaching of EIL (English as an International Language) that makes use of content EMI (English-Medium Instruction) classes in higher education. Intended as CLIL for ELF (English as a Lingua Franca), this approach is called CELFIL (Content and ELF Integrated Learning). It has been found important for CELFIL to adapt its goals and implementations in accordance with various factors such as student demographics. Techniques developed for CELFIL include OSGD (Observed Small Group Discussion), in which students take turns in observing their peers’ small group discussions to facilitate the learning of both the content and communication skills in EIL.
