ABSTRACT

Children are not often asked their opinions by researchers or administrators about such basic aspects of their lives as how they view school, playtime, or holidays. Researchers tried out various ways of interviewing children, including group interviews at school and individual interviews at home. In the end, they decided to interview them individually at school. Interviewing at home was logistically difficult, because of the uncertainty of finding the children in, and it would not always have been possible to find a place where children could talk privately. Researchers decided to focus the interview on five issues: the children's attitude to school and lessons; their attitude to playground experiences; their self-assessment of their academic standing; their perception of "naughtiness" in themselves and others; and the extent to which they were aware of discrimination by staff or children.
