ABSTRACT

The ‘other’ environmental tradition refers to the particular strand of twentieth century architecture that emerged in the Nordic countries during the middle years of the twentieth century. In the physical climate experienced between the latitudes of 55° and 65° north of the Equator, with cold, dark winters and temperate, long summer days, architecture, of necessity, adopts a specific and unique response. This may be seen in the buildings of Alvar Aalto, Erik Gunnar Asplund, Arne Jacobsen and Erik Møller, which are discussed in this essay.
