ABSTRACT

In this chapter we consider the morality of musical works themselves and moral issues raised by music’s production and reception. Specifically, we ask (1) whether a moral flaw in a piece of music need be an artistic flaw; (2) whether singing along to morally flawed songs is itself morally bad; (3) whether instrumental classical music contributes to the oppression of women; and (4) whether it is morally acceptable for white musicians to play music that is part of black culture.
