ABSTRACT

In this chapter we investigate philosophers’ attempts to define music, that is, to give an informative account of what distinguishes music from non-music. We consider (1) what role may be played in a definition of music by concepts such as sound, silence, hearing, listening, art, and basic musical features (such as pitch and rhythm); (2) different forms a definition might take; and (3) criticisms of the ways in which philosophers have pursued the definition of music.
