ABSTRACT
In this chapter, we investigate the nature of musical recordings in general, and how differences in musical traditions (in particular, jazz, classical, and rock) have given rise to different approaches to the creation and appreciation of recordings. The discussion raises philosophical questions about live recordings, studio recordings, studio constructions, and cover versions. We end by considering the comparative value of live performances and recordings.
