ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book introduces the principles of containerisation by analysing its impact on ports and shipping. It considers the implications of the system of overseas transport for the distribution policies of shipping Unes' customers. The book also introduces the transport operators' customers. It analyses the competitive position of freight-liners on the basis of the costs of road and rail transport as well as the patterns of charging. The book examines the broad features of inland container systems and considers the nature of the inland freight market. It also examine the factors considered by firms in selecting inland transport modes, the features of the use of freightliners by firms, and the factors which limit the use of container systems. The book describes future technological changes and developments in routes and systems.
