ABSTRACT

In conclusion I would invite the reader to reflect on what he has read. In the Introduction we promised to explain how the concept of mental health was of importance to everybody, and not just to a number of experts. Has this promise been redeemed? In chapter 2 we examined some of the ways in which people commonly thought about ‘mental health’ under the influence of science, and briefly considered the ways in which these popular views were crystallised into the form which most educational institutions now have, and the objectives they pursued, with the resulting pressures on the teacher: and we concluded by asking ourselves how this existing situation might be amplified by other educational ideals. Was this picture a fair one? Does it show a confusion about the concept of ‘mental health’ which might stand in the way of new educational ideals?
