ABSTRACT

All elementary school children should have access to a high-quality classroom music program taught by qualified teachers. This chapter presents “The Why” music needs to be a part of a child’s education, an introduction to what children should learn about music (including the latest legislation to ensure that), and a summary of the new 2014 National Core Music Standards. In addition, specifics are given for the allocation of sufficient time for music instruction and suggestions for basic instruction materials and equipment that are necessary to provide a viable elementary classroom music program.
