ABSTRACT

The sounds of music are everywhere in our twenty-first-century world. We hear everything from classics to pop, jazz to the world’s many music traditions, and fusions of all kinds. Elementary school children should experience this musical diversity and the school curriculum should include music of all styles and periods—classical music, music of a many different cultures and traditions, jazz, and popular music. Specific information about classical music, world music, jazz, and popular music is presented and suggestions/guidelines for instructional approaches are offered.
