ABSTRACT

While eating disorder behaviors are mentioned in other chapters, this chapter identifies over 150 behaviors that are accessible to those with eating disorders. The author believes that any behavior that is in any way involved with supporting eating disorder attitudes and behaviors is to be considered. Any variation in executing an eating disorder behavior may carry with it a serious risk not associated with other methods. As an example, drinking floor cleaner to induce vomiting typically will present a more serious health risk than using a couple of fingers to induce vomiting would. Eating disorder related behaviors are grouped under separate headings. “Purging Behaviors” include vomiting, the use of laxatives, suppositories, diuretics, withholding insulin, and breastfeeding. “Calorie Burning and Metabolism Altering Behaviors” are represented by compulsive exercise and chemical and nonchemical metabolism boosters as well as the use of heating blankets. “Body Gauging Behaviors” include the use of the scale, mirrors, and clothing as well as pinching parts of the body and measuring tapes. “Restricting Eating Behaviors,” the use of “False Information,” Organizing Behaviors,” and “Surgery and Other Cosmetic Altering Methods” as well as “Substance Use” are included.
