ABSTRACT
This chapter's theme of influence through integrity is epitomized by three giants of American fictional folklore. Atticus Finch in Harper Lee's novel To Kill a Mockingbird wins people's hearts and minds by standing out from the crowd and sticking to his principles. Gorge Bailey in Frank Capra's film It's A Wonderful Life also wins the respect of his home town through his principles and service to others. The chapter shows how to avoid Dick Diver's mistakes and become a person of influence like Finch and Bailey. There are six instigators of influence: volition, values, valour, vision, vigour and validity. Integrity transcends everything and is worth more than the riches of Solomon. Dick Diver in Scott Fitzgerald's Tender is the Night is Finch's and Bailey's opposite. He squanders his brilliant mind and potential influence in the shadow of his beautiful, schizophrenic wife and in pursuit of a frivolous, meaningless lifestyle.
