ABSTRACT

Theories abound, from Action-Centred Leadership to Theory Z, but these ideas will remain temporary fads if they do not become a way of life through a fundamental change in people's assumptions and attitudes. Downsizing meant Doomsday for many anxious, fearful and angry employees. Bad attitudes can circumvent well-intentioned legislation, when people turn a blind eye to bullying, sexual harassment, racial discrimination and other unacceptable behaviour. The research evidence shows an important distinction between job satisfaction and motivation. It again emphasizes that putting humanity into the workplace can help the balance sheet. Every productive human being believes in a visionary purpose that inspires extraordinary performance. Legal rights provide employees with a minimum guarantee but they are not enough on their own. Employees have the right to know all information relevant to their jobs and learn continuously. The UK government has recognized the importance of employee rights and introduced a Fairness at Work Bill.
