ABSTRACT

The basic objective here is to gain insight into the status of established theory relative to the concepts of periphery, rural as objects and processes. A first goal is to establish the way theory is actually used in the analytical approaches. Which are the relevant basic theories? Are they suited for the problem area approached? Furthermore, this chapter discusses some aspects of modern theoretical endeavours that could improve our understanding of the periphery. This building a platform for a bridge from theory to practice via the technicalities provided by general methodological considerations.
