ABSTRACT

The business of transport is no exception to the rule that there are ways of doing business with organisation, and ways of doing business without it. Organisation is something added to, and separable from, business itself. Long before he had even the crudest tools to help him, man carried loads upon his back or head. To this day, all over the world, we find transport businesses without organisation. The rickshaw coolie plying for hire with his own rickshaw: the ferryman running a scheduled service with his own ferryboat: the country carrier doing a daily round in his van: the light aircraft owner who does rescue work in the Alps on a charter basis: all these are examples of the business of transport without organisation.
