ABSTRACT

This part introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters. The part explains how children develop mathematically from birth to five. It describes how practitioners can create a mathematically-rich environment. The part explores the importance of positive partnerships between practitioners and parents or carers in identifying children’s learning needs to support their learning and in ensuring a quick response to any specific areas of difficulty. It shows how learning can be extended in the home and how a positive dialogue with parents and carers should be taken into account during any assessment. The part argues that it is vital that all assessments should be shared with parents and carers as they will be able to bring their experience of supporting the child to enhance the results of the assessment. It provides advice on helping parents to support their child.
