ABSTRACT

In a world of social media, the first day of ‘school’ is often accompanied by the putting on of a new uniform, and has become a widely shared event. Photographs of proud parents with occasionally underwhelmed offspring in this strange new outfit are shared across social media platforms. The chapter provides advice to practitioners working in early year’s settings as they prepare for the move into what is often a more formal primary education. It shows how teaching and learning might be organised differently in the first stages of primary education to a kindergarten or early years setting. The chapter explores how parents and careers might support their child make a comfortable transition into primary school, such as possible questions to ask when they meet the teacher for the first time and what to look for in the new classroom as they look around with their child.
