ABSTRACT

Teachers are told that they need to teach their students about diversity. Renee Cook began by writing the word "diversity" on the board using a different color of chalk for each letter. She then asked students what they thought the word meant. Renee then held up a beautiful patchwork quilt and asked the students to describe it. They spoke up about many different colors, different shapes, sizes, and designs. Renee went on to say that it took all of the pieces sewn together to make up the beauty and the charm of the quilt. She told the class that that is how diversity works—that different people together make this a beautiful world. Cheryl Afghanipour has a passion for helping her students to gain a broader perspective of cultural diversity. She teaches in an inner-city middle school that is made up predominantly of minority students. The chapter describes a student teacher who was introducing the concept of diversity.
