ABSTRACT

Perhaps the number-one reason most of people become teachers is because people want to make a difference in students' lives. People remain in the profession because of the difference our students make in the lives. The glow of that "light of understanding" when they finally grasp something we have been trying to teach gives us fulfillment. From prospective teachers to retired teachers, there is an energy—the light—that keeps finding its way into the eyes when people talk about learning and kids. One student, Michelle Thomason, wrote an essay about the light that came in her eyes as she thought of becoming a teacher. Desks are arranged in communities surrounded by bright bulletin boards and learning stations. The students are under the wings of a variety of people from a variety of places with a variety of dreams. Genny Cramer has been teaching for many years and is director of a university graduate reading program.
