ABSTRACT

To make use of the then prevailing ENE wind was most important as it would facilitate our approach to the Patagonian coast at Cabo Blanco, 2 where I meant to rectify the latitude determinations of 1789, since a strange effect of the currents had left them somewhat uncertain at the time. 3 We knew from experience that these winds were short-lived in this region, and indeed, the frequent calms that we experienced after midday seemed to confirm our suspicions.
