ABSTRACT

We were under full sail in order to get some distance offshore before the sea breeze either dropped or shifted to the east, when the Governor’s boat was sighted off the entrance to the harbour, following us under oars with a small pennant or signal flag at the bow, clearly indicating a desire to catch up with us. We hove to immediately, and before midday it came alongside, having been sent by Major Grose with the object of bringing us a soldier of his regiment who had been charged with fraud in the matter of a few trifles which he had received by sale or exchange from the carpenter of the Atrevida. The Major requested that other equivalent objects be taken as payment for those given by the soldier, which we did in the hope that this measure would give new strength to our appeals for leniency in the soldier’s inevitable punishment.
