ABSTRACT

The commanding officer of the frigate Concepción at the time was Teniente de Navío Don Manuel Saavedra, 2 since Teniente de Navío Don Francisco Eliza 3 had taken charge of the snow San Carlos, with the aim of continuing the survey of the coast to the north and south of Nootka Sound with the schooner Saturna. The entire establishment 4 was under the command of that officer [Saavedra], including the batteries at the entrance, since the independent company of Catalonian volunteers had been brought in an auxiliary capacity, their capitán, Don Pedro Alberní, 1 was also there, the teniente and alférez who had accompanied him having been withdrawn because of ill-health. All the sick, most of them suffering from scurvy and in a very bad way, had been taken back to San Blas in the frigate Princesa, under the orders of Teniente de Navío Don Jacinto Caamaño. 2 The establishment had received the necessary provisions from the snow San Carlos and the frigate Aránzazu. The return of the latter from the port of Monterey, where she had been sent to collect fresh meat was to ensure for the following winter, with such an important commodity, the well being of the seamen and troops who were then in the presidio. ‘Piano del Puerto de la Sta Cruz de Nutka llamado por los naturales de Yucuat, levantado por orden del rey en 1791.’ Museo Naval, Madrid https://s3-euw1-ap-pe-df-pch-content-public-p.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/9781315211930/cd22de9e-9362-44da-a1cc-ff05ce8c8439/content/pla19_B.tif"/>
