ABSTRACT

Our opinion so far of this harbour differed utterly from the favourable impression that it had made when viewed from a distance. We thought that navigators from the Philippines were justified in their desire to stop calling at this roadstead despite the shortages which would inevitably inconvenience them until Acapulco after such a long passage. A difficult entrance due to a lack of landmarks, a sky constantly overcast and foggy, the very dangerous proximity of Point Pinos and finally the position of the anchorage itself, the northern extremity of which gave little shelter from the prevailing winds, being some ten leagues from Point A⃱o Nuevo, were other obstacles to forming even a passable opinion of these parts.
