ABSTRACT

At the time [of our visit] 1 the important command of the Philippines was held by Brigadier de Real Armada Don Felix Berenguer de Marquina, 2 while in the capital Capitán de Navío Don Francisco Muñoz de San Clemente held the positions of Teniente de Rey, 3 Inspector of Troops, and Comandante of the Cavite Dockyard. Everything, therefore, led us to anticipate that this stay would be one of the most agreeable we were to have, among officers who were not only of the same corps, but were also men of qualities well proven in the different posts in which they had served, either as scientists or as members of the armed forces. A nine-gun salute to the city was fired immediately, and answered according to regulations. At the same time Teniente de Navío Don José Espinosa went ashore to pay his respects to these senior officers to appraise them of the assistance which would be most necessary for the prompt continuation of our work and to arrange for the delivery of the mail from Acapulco to the post office.
