ABSTRACT
The mere visual examination – at best hasty and superficial – of the successive coastlines we had sailed along during our voyage, was in itself inadequate to fulfill the extensive aims of the expedition, whose main interest was to foster the progress of all sciences. Among them, that of natural sciences was preeminent.
