ABSTRACT

This chapter outlines how the capitalist mode of production can be periodized into three stages: laissez-faire, monopoly, and state monopoly capitalism. It focuses on the restructuring of one state apparatus: education. The chapter provides some of the contradictions within nationalized industries, draws some parallels and stresses the point that there are similar tensions and problems in education. Nationalization involves an ever-present tension between the interests of the working class, which requires it as a step towards proletarian control of the economy, and those of the bourgeoisie which requires its operation as capital. The theme of submission to the discipline of capitalist society was continued on work-socialization. The chapter presents some of the recent developments in education within the economic crisis of capitalism. It is difficult to struggle against some of these divisions, these discriminatory practices, such as racism and sexism, as they have become institutionalized.
